Breeding Standards

Genetic Integrity Above All

Our breeding philosophy is anchored in the preservation of vitality, structural correctness, and classic breed traits. We do not chase temporary trends or rapid growth metrics. Instead, we invest years into stabilizing specific lines.

Every bird selected for our foundation pens represents the culmination of multiple generations of observation. We track laying consistency, temperament, and resilience against natural elements to ensure our stock thrives in practical farming environments.

The Process

How We Select Our Breeders

01

Hatch Vigor

Selection begins at the incubator. Only chicks displaying immediate vitality, flawless healing, and rapid mobility are banded for future evaluation.

02

Growth Markers

At 16 weeks, young fowl undergo structural assessment. We look for broad backs, correct leg placement, and standard-compliant feathering.

03

Production Trial

Pullets are monitored through their first laying cycle to confirm egg size, shell quality, and laying consistency before entering the breeding pen.

04

Final Selection

Only the top 5% of our hatched stock makes it to the foundation pens. These birds represent the pinnacle of Ashcombe Heritage Fowl genetics.

Common Inquiries

Questions About Our Lines

Understanding the nuances of heritage poultry ensures you make the right choice for your own breeding or farm program.

Do you introduce new genetics to your lines?

Rarely and with extreme caution. Our foundation pens are closed to maintain purity and predictability. If an outcross is ever necessary to improve vigor, it is done through a multi-year test mating process in separate facilities before being integrated.

Are your birds vaccinated?

Yes. Farm biosecurity and flock health are paramount. All foundation breeding stock is vaccinated according to standard commercial poultry health protocols to ensure robust immunity passed down to offspring.

Can I purchase hatching eggs from specific pens?

We offer hatching eggs seasonally when our own incubator needs are met. Availability is strictly limited to ensure we only provide eggs with peak fertility rates from our most active breeding pens.
